The Alaska Office of the Smithsonian's Arctic Studies Center hosted an Iñupiaq language workshop in January 2011, bringing together eight fluent speakers of Alaska's northernmost Native tongue for four days of intensive discussions about NMNH and NMAI objects in the Smithsonian exhibition, Living Our Cultures, Sharing Our Heritage: The First Peoples of Alaska at the Anchorage Museum. One goal of the project is to document a language that is now spoken fluently by fewer than 600 people, 92% of them over the age of 65. Another is to create language teaching videos for use in the North Alaskan schools. This project represents one of the Arctic Studies Center's major initiatives under the NMNH Recovering Voices program. For more information, go to http://www.mnh.si.edu/arctic/html/alaska.htm...

For thousands of years, Alaska went largely unnoticed by explorers. Movement to gain statehood was unpopular at first but it was proclaimed a state in 1959. We're grateful for our 49th state! Learn more about history and science with Studies Weekly at www.StudiesWeekly.com.

A project I made for an Alaska Studies course in Spring 2016. This is my Local Project on Percy's Cafe and Liquor store which gives a brief story/history of the local scene that used to exist around it. The last segment ends on the modern day liquor store and it's future.

Anthropological Film by Kristine Nyborg In the late 1800s two expeditions of Sami reindeer herders were recruited from Norway by the American Government to help teach the Alaska Natives how to herd reindeer. The animal was not indigenous to Alaska at the time, and the importation of domesticated reindeer to Alaska changed the Natives from being hunters and gatherers to also being herders. The reindeer has now become a part of Alaska's diet. The people of Alaska tell the story of how the Sami have influenced their lives. Director Kristine Nyborg Duration: 28 min , 2010 Alaska USA --------------- For more information and to watch the full film please contact the Visual Cultural Studies Archive at the University in Tromsø: https://en.uit.no/om/enhet/artikkel?p_document_id=168247&p_...

Travel video about destination Denali National Park in Alaska. Denali National Park is located about six hundred and thirty miles from the southern coast of Alaska and is nine thousand six hundred square miles of original Sub-Arctic wilderness. The history of the region began millions of years ago when mighty tectonic plates collided. The force of the collision folded the granite and sedimentary rock together at a huge elevation which subsequently formed the highest mountain in North America, Mount Mckinley. The coniferous forests consist primarily of birch and fir and deciduous trees and shrubs cover the stone-based valleys. An amazing variety of bushes, herbs and flowers turn the landscape into an array of bright colour. On the thin humus above the permafrost soil there’s vegetation ...
